Atocha coins are Spanish silver and gold coins recovered from the shipwreck of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, a Spanish galleon that sank in 1622:
History
The Nuestra Señora de Atocha was part of a fleet of ships carrying riches from the Americas to Spain. The ship sank in a hurricane near the Florida Keys on September 6, 1622, killing over 260 people and losing tons of cargo. The ship’s cargo included silver coins from Potosi, Lima, and Mexico City, as well as gold coins minted in Spain.
Discovery
The wreck of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha was discovered in 1985 by Treasure Salvors, Inc. The coins are highly sought after for their historical significance and the captivating story of their recovery.
Coin Types
The silver coins are called “pieces of eight” and are measured in reales. The denominations are 8 reales, 4 reales, 2 reales, 1 real, ½ real, and ¼ real. An 8 reales silver coin was roughly equivalent to one month’s pay for a sailor in the 1600s. The gold coins were likely held by the wealthy passengers.
Coin Value
The value of an Atocha coin is influenced by several factors, including the date and Assayer’s mark. Coins with a clear date and Assayer’s mark are more valuable.
Replicas
Some collectors debate the authenticity of replicas of Atocha coins, which are minted from the same silver bars as the original coins. At Cleopatra’s Barge you have the option of purchasing originals or replicas for a more affordable price.
